A California Maverick

Since 1883, Concannon Vineyard has been a trailblazer in California wine. Our story started when James Concannon immigrated to America over 130 years ago. He was a maverick who challenged the status quo, and was one of the first to craft Bordeaux-style wines in California. Recognizing the striking similarity to the premier terroir of France, he saw the distinct potential of this land and chose the Livermore Valley over Napa to establish Concannon Vineyard.

Prohibition and Perseverance

Our founder James’ son, Joe, kept our vines flourishing through Prohibition, persevering to keep Concannon operational during tough times—a feat commemorated by our Prohibition-dated bottles being welcomed into the National Museum of American History, *Smithsonian collection.

The Concannon Cabernet Sauvignon Clones

Over 130 years ago, our founder, James Concannon, began importing extraordinary Cabernet Sauvignon vines directly from the renowned Château Margaux in Bordeaux. Years later, in 1965, his grandson, Jim, collaborated with UC Davis in selecting cuttings from one of those vines for heat treatment. These dynamic, virus-resistant vines later became known as Concannon Cabernet Clones 7, 8 and 11 and played a key role in helping California Cabernet achieve international recognition. Today, we are proud that an estimated 80% of California’s Cabernet Sauvignon is planted with our Concannon Clones.

America’s First Petite Sirah®

Before 1961, Petite Sirah was used worldwide mainly as a blending grape; however, Jim Concannon recognized this luscious variety’s potential and is now honored for being first to release Petite Sirah as a standalone varietal wine from his 1961 vintage.

Continuing the Legacy

There’s a legacy at work here, one that we strive to uphold and continue. We may come from a place of tradition, but our wines will never be conventional—and you’ll taste it in every sip.
